Planning a tiger safari itinerary in India involves several practical considerations that differ meaningfully from other wildlife destinations.
Most major parks operate on a permit system with a limited number of vehicles per zone per drive, and permits for popular zones at parks like Bandhavgarh and Ranthambore should be secured well in advance, particularly during the peak October–March season.
Sighting probability increases toward the end of the dry season (April–June) as vegetation thins and animals concentrate around water sources, though this comes with significant heat; October–March offers a more comfortable balance of decent sightings and pleasant weather.
Realistic expectations matter: even in high-density parks like Bandhavgarh, no sighting can be guaranteed on any single drive, and we generally recommend a minimum of two full days (four drives) at any one park to give a reasonable probability of at least one strong sighting.
Combining parks — for example Kanha and Bandhavgarh, or Ranthambore with a Rajasthan heritage circuit — is an effective way to both increase overall sighting chances and diversify the itinerary beyond wildlife alone.
